FALL DUCK POND - SETUP & DIRECTIONS

Short Carnival Savers video/gif shows a galvanized tub with fall themed duck pond - coming soon!

Supplies for Quacky Pumpkin Pick Game Carnival Game:

bullet point Mini Pumpkin Themed Ducks (see below)
bullet point Pool Noodle - we choose blue but any color will work (and a kitchen knife for adults to cute slices)
bullet point Kitchen knife for adults to cut slices to act as floats for the pumpkin ducks
bullet point Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks (for adults, of course)
bullet point Sharpie type marker to add short words to the bottom of the pool noodle floats
bullet point Toddler Pool or other large bucket or container with water to make the ducks float
bullet point Access to Water - Large Pitcher or empty Milk Jugs for filling pond with water
bullet point Carnival Prizes - fall themed prizes, or Toddler Safe Toys are great as prizes - See Some Cute Prize Ideas Below!

Make This Game:

First, we tested these cute Fall/Halloween rubber ducks - and at first they floated just fine in the water. But after about 1 hour, they seemed to take on water and be likely to tip over which is defeats the point of this cute game.

The fix is simple and inexpensive! :)

Slice the pool noodle into thin donuts - about 1/2 inch thick. You will need one for each mini duck - we had plenty left over after cutting more than 24.

Heat up the glue gun and glue the mini pumpkin ducks to the center of each pool noodle float.

Next - add matching words to the bottom of the ducks - if you have 24 ducks you need 12 different short words.

Here is a list we came up with:

  • Apple
  • Spice
  • Acorn
  • Cat
  • Pie
  • Hay
  • Crisp
  • Cider
  • Sky
  • Maze
  • Bat
  • Leaf

Game Setup:

This game is a super easy and fast game to set up! Gather your prizes, place in different baskets or buckets and set out your ticket box near your "fall duck pond".

Next, you simply need your "duck pond" to be filled with just enough water for the ducks to float and to place the ducks in the pond. Wait to add the water until you are ready for children to play this game - this can be one of the last games you set up before kids are ready to play!

Warning: Only fill with water when an adult can be present at all times to ensure that a toddler does not fall in. Please see this Consumer Product Safety Commission PDF on preventing water injuries for children.

How to Play this Fall Game:

The goal of this game is to choose 2 ducks and match the words on the bottom of each duck to win a prize.

Festival players are given 3 chances to pick two different ducks with matching numbers on their bottom side. If the numbers on 2 ducks match, they win a prize!

Each player has 3 chances to match the ducks. So each player may pick 2 different ducks up to 3 times to see if they can come up with a matching set!

This game is especially loved by toddlers and is also a classic carnival game!

Also, although this looks easy - this game is fairly challenging. You may wish to use it as a learning opportunity and allow kids to choose ducks until they make a match. In that case, they get a top prize if they match within 3 chances otherwise, they still receive a small prize.

Additional Hints & Tips:

The Duck Pond is a traditional carnival game loved by young children, especially preschoolers including toddlers. Don't have your feelings hurt if the 4th grade and older children walk right by this booth - it will seem too childish for them to stay to play. Choose prizes with that in mind - things that will appeal to toddler and preschool children.

We also love to have Toddler Prizes available at all booths where children under the age of three year would like to play. Toddler prizes can be simple like mini fish crackers or toddler fruit gummy packets that are safer for younger children or check out our Toddler Safe Toys and Prizes here.

Give parents the opportunity to have a Toddler prize instead of the other small toys that are not designed for children under the age of three.

Warning: Because this game involves water, be sure to have an adult present with this game at all times! Also, please follow the guidelines from the Consumer Products Safety Commission regarding young children and water. Click here to learn more.
